3 Signs That Your AC Unit Needs Servicing

Posted on: 21 March 2016

Air conditioning units are now the norm in most homes. Even in older homes there are air conditioning units installed. This is why it is important that people understand the signs that their AC unit is no longer working properly. Here are some things that you should be looking for.

1. Poor Air Quality

One of the things you will notice if your AC unit is struggling is a poor air quality in the home. If the filters are dirty, or if the unit isn't doing its job properly there is a good chance that the unit will blow the dirt and dust throughout the house. This means that the air quality of the home will go significantly down.

Some ways to tell if the air quality is poor is to look at the symptoms of those living in the house. If everyone is waking up with sore throats, showing signs of asthma like symptoms, or sneezing a lot, then there is a good chance that there is a problem with your air. In addition, you might notice that the house is becoming dustier than normal. These are both signs that there is too much dust and dirt in the air.

2. Excessive Energy Bill

Another thing you should be looking for is changes to your energy bill. Keep records of how much you generally pay in your utilities each month and from year to year. For example, you should notice a peak in July and June when it is the hottest, and a decline in the fall. If your bill is rising rapidly in the off-season, there is a good chance that your AC unit isn't working efficiently. The older the unit and the worst shape it is in, the more energy you will use, which will cause your bill to sky rocket.

3. Uneven Cooling

Lastly, you should be looking for any uneven cooling in the house. For instance, when the AC is on, does it feel like one room gets significantly cooler than the others? Perhaps one side of the house is comfortable and the other side is still hot. If this is the case, there may be a problem with your AC unit. The AC should be blowing air throughout the house evenly. If it isn't you should have the unit serviced.

By looking for these signs you can determine if your AC unit is working properly and when it is time to call for air conditioning repairs.
