2 Noises Coming From Your Central A/C Unit That Should Alert You To A Problem

Posted on: 7 October 2020

When you have a central air conditioning unit for your home, you may be used to hearing the gentle hum while it is running and even a gentle thud when the compressor kicks on and off. However, lately, you may have been noticing another sound that does not seem to be normal. If so, below are a couple of noises that can come from your A/C unit which may be alerting you to a potential problem.

1.  Gurgling Noises Heard When the Compressor Shuts Off

One noise that may be coming from your air conditioning unit is often heard when the compressor shuts off. You may hear a gurgling that sounds as though a liquid is trying to force its way through a small opening.

If you are hearing the gurgling noise, there are a couple of potential causes. First, the condensation line may be clogged up and is unable to drain the excessive moisture efficiently. In this case, you can turn off the unit, remove the line, and clean it out by running warm water through it.

Second, there may be a coolant leak somewhere in the lines or the compressor itself. If this is the case, you may also notice that the air blowing through your vents is not as cool as it should be. Since a coolant leak poses health and environmental risks, you should have a professional find and repair it as soon as possible.

2.  Clicking Sound Heard While the Unit Is Running

Another concerning noise you may be hearing is a clicking sound that is present when the unit is running. If you can still hear the compressor kick on and air is blowing out of the vents, this clicking noise is most likely caused by an object that is striking the fan blades. After turning off the unit, open the access panel, and remove the obstacle.

However, if the compressor is not kicking on and/or you do not have air blowing, there could be an electrical issue. A repair service will need to be consulted to fix this problem.

If you suspect that the noises coming from your unit are serious or you cannot determine the source of the sounds, you should have the system looked at by an air conditioning repair professional as soon as possible in case they mean that there is a serious issue with the unit. Contact an air conditioning repair service as soon as possible to schedule a service call so that the problem can be found and fixed.
